🇿🇼
Zimbabwe (ZIMRA)
Duty ranges from 40–80% based on engine size and vehicle age. VAT at 15% applies on the duty-inclusive value. Vehicles over 5 years attract additional surtax.
🇿🇲
Zambia (ZRA)
Import duty of 25–30%, VAT at 16%, and excise duty on higher-engine vehicles. Pickups and commercial vehicles attract lower rates under COMESA preferences.
🇧🇼
Botswana (BURS)
SACU rates apply — typically 25% duty plus 12% VAT. SADC-origin vehicles may qualify for preferential tariffs that reduce total import costs significantly.
Frequently asked questions
What is CIF value and how does it affect duty? ▾
CIF stands for Cost, Insurance and Freight — the declared value of the vehicle including shipping to the port of entry. Most SADC countries calculate import duty as a percentage of CIF, so add estimated freight costs to your vehicle price before calculating.
Can I use this for Japanese or UK imports? ▾
Yes. Enter the vehicle's FOB value in USD, EUR or GBP, then add estimated freight to South Africa (typically $800–$1,500 from Japan, $600–$1,000 from the UK) to your vehicle value. Duty is calculated on the CIF value at the destination country border.
Are these figures exact or estimates? ▾
These are estimates based on published tariff schedules and typical clearing agent fees. Actual amounts vary based on your vehicle's HS tariff classification, the customs post used, and your agent's fees. Always confirm with a licensed clearing agent before purchasing.
How do vehicle cards on AutoBids show landed cost? ▾
Every vehicle listing on AutoBids shows a landed cost estimate for your selected destination country. Set your destination using the country selector in the navigation bar. The estimate uses the same calculation engine as this tool.
What vehicles qualify for lower surtax in Zimbabwe? ▾
Vehicles under 5 years old generally attract lower surtax under ZIMRA regulations. Engine sizes below 1500cc also benefit from reduced tariff rates. Electric and hybrid vehicles qualify for special concessions introduced in recent ZIMRA reforms.
